Summer 2007

The Bayside Center offers environmental and science camps through out the summer. Campers aged 6-11 are welcome to join in on all the fun and games. All camps are $75 and run from Monday through Friday 9 am to 12 noon. Please provide your child with a snack, bug/sun lotion and wear sneakers or sandals with straps. Your child’s adventure with science will include a workbook to keep, crafts, games, experiments, live animals, movies and more. Sign ups will be at the Civic Center on Saturday June 2, 2007 from 9 to noon. After June 2 applications will be taken at City Hall Annex located on 9th and Asbury. Applications will also be taken at Bayside Center beginning on Saturday June 23, 2007. All classes are limited to fifteen students! Two certified teachers develop and implement the curriculum! All classes, curriculums and workbooks are updated on a yearly basis.

Class Descriptions

Birds of the Barrier Island- Survey the birds that call Ocean City their home. From gulls to raptors, investigate how they hunt, eat, migrate and survive the barrier island!  At the end of the week dissect owl pellets!

Cephalopods- Study the octopus, squid, nautilus and cuttlefish. Learn all about their behaviors, the oceans that they live in and how they interact with other animals. Dissect several specimens at the end of the week.

The Majestic Shark- Learn about the different types of sharks and how they interact with each other. Examine shark teeth; learn all about shark senses, feeding frenzies, shark skin and tails. Learn the reasons why sharks should be more scared of humans! Dissect a spiny dogfish at the end of the week.

Creepy Crawlies- This totally hands on class explores bugs and spiders. Go on a daily bug hunt and hang out in the butterfly tent. Learn all about spiders and how they control the bug population.

Exploring the Shore- A great introduction to the Bayside Camp! What is an estuary anyway? In this totally hands-on class, students will explore and learn about the estuary, bay, ocean, and backyards of our own barrier island of Ocean City. Dissect a starfish at the end of week!

Weather Balloons and Rockets- Weather is a powerful force! Learn how it changes daily, how you can tell by observing nature, extreme weather and how it rains and snows. Construct weather balloons and your own rocket that will be launched into the atmosphere at the end of the week!

Nature’s Fury- This class is all about our planet. Study volcanoes, tornados and earthquakes. Make magma, erupt your own hurricanes, break open geodes, examine and make real fossils.
