SMITHEREENS KICK-OFF BOARDWALK CONCERT SERIES IN O.C. ON MAY 27TH
OCEAN CITY, N.J.----The Smithereens, a popular and durable rock band formed 1980 in Cateret, will kick-off this resort’s Boardwalk Concert series on Sun., May 27. The concert is set for 8 p.m. at the enclosed, climate controlled Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace.
The group was booked for the City by Live Nation/ Electric Factory Concerts of Philadelphia. Tickets are $25 available at City Hall Annex, 901 Asbury Ave. from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mon.-Sun., call 609-525-9300
An Alternative rock band, The Smithereens rocketed to prominence when the single from its first album, Blood and Roses, was used for the theme song and on the soundtrack of the 1986 Albert Pyun movie, Dangerously Close. The video was played frequently on MTV giving The Smithereens national exposure.
The band has remained popular over the past quarter century with a series of nine studio albums on the Capitol, BMG and Excelsior labels and a live album from the Music Midtown Festival in Atlanta. A new album will be released this summer.
The band is heavily booked throughout through the year performing in such venues as the Zin Fest in Lodi Park, CA, The Forum of the Canyons, Park City Utah, the Hollywood Park in Inglewood CA, the WXPN Festival in Camden and the House of Blues in Atlantic City.
The versatile quartet is noted for its original rock albums and creative adaptations of classic icons. As part of its program in Ocean City, the Smithereens will perform Beatle’s songs from its homage album to the British rock legends.
The band’s members include Pat DiNizio, lead singer and guitar, Jim Babjak, guitar, Severo Jornacion, bass and Dennis Diken, drums.
The Ocean City series continues in July when Stockton State College moves its summer series to the Music Pier featuring Buckwheat Zydeco, July 2, $20; Classic Fleetwood Mac performed by Rumours, July 9, $20; John Sebastian and Roger McGuinn of the Lovin’ Spoonful and The Byrds, July 16, $20 and The Grass Roots with lead singer, Rob Grill, July 23, $20.

Other Music Pier concerts include the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Aug. 13, $25 and Jay and the Americans, Sept. 8, $25, both at 8 p.m.
Two children’ concerts are set for the Music Pier, Milk Shake on Aug. 6 and Ralph’s World on Aug. 27, both concerts at 4 p.m., Adults $15, Children 12 and under $10, under 2 are free. Several more concerts are still to be announced.
