STILL CREEPING AFTER ALL THESE YEARS…..
MARTIN MOLLUSK SEEKS SHADOW ON MAY 3rd
OCEAN CITY, N.J.--- He may be a little testy sometimes and insistent about hoopla. But you have to admit he’s been consistent and loyal to this family resort.
The he in question is Martin Z. Mollusk, the City’s pomp crazed, weather predicting hermit tree crab. Martin will return to the Ocean City beach for the 32nd time on the 9th Street Beach opposite the Music Pier on Thursday, May 3 and attempt to see his shadow. If he does, summer comes one week early to Ocean City much to the delight of the business community, town folk and visitors. If not, no big deal, it comes on time.
The suspense is building and almost palatable although the crustacean has seen his shadow during every creep during the past three decades except once when he cast a partial shadow. That year, summer came 3 ½ days early.
Martin will be met on the sands by Big Mama Llama of Bready Farms in Tuckahoe, the animal that authenticates his creep. If Big Mama Llama shakes her head, it means that Martin has seen his shadow. As an added precaution, the famous inspector Clewso has been retained to verify Big Mama’s decision with his magnifying glass.
The hermit crab will arrive at the Moorlyn Terrace Beach amid much hoopla. The Ocean City High School Band will play a stirring rendition of Pomp and Circumstance. Martin will be carried to the beach by Clewso and Elvis performer, Ted Prior. Others in the entourage include Suzanne Muldowney as Shelly the Mermaid; Cool Joe Canine, the City’s Ambassador of Woof Woof and Trash Buster, the Canned Crusader, the community’s environmental symbol. Prior will serenade Martin with “You Ain’t Nothin’ But a Hermit Crab.”
The highlight of the day is when all assembled sing “Some Enchanted Morning, you may see a tree crab, you may see a tree crab, across a crowded beach, and somehow you know even then, that Martin Z. Mollusk is creeping again…" etc.
The annual Martin Z. Mollusk Humanitarian Awards will be presented to Shrivers Salt Water Taffy and Big Mama Llama of Bready Farms in Tuckahoe during the proceedings.
The award is given to those who have aided and abetted Martin in his creepy ways over the years.
